It's Never Too Late!

Shelley Noonan

I'm sending you love and tea,
To warm your winter's day.
Think of me as you pour your cup
And all the good things we would say.
If we could be together now
Instead of miles apart,
We'd sip our teas and memories,
The sweet warmth fills the heart.
- Susan Young

Mentoring Long Distance

It is never too late to mentor you daughter. It is never too late to mentor you daughter. These are the words that I comforted myself with when my only daughter left for a college 100 miles from home. I had just finished revising Beyond Beautiful Girlhood Plus Companion Guide and I wanted to go through it with her. After all, I wrote with her in mind. As I worked on the book I kept wondering… Did I teach her enough about home management? Did I diligently train her in regard to taking care of herself? Did I spend enough time showing her how to have a quiet time, pray and memorize scripture? Did I share my heart with her?

My solution to these burning questions was to mentor long distance. Normally, mentoring is arranged where you can spend time meeting face to face and work on difficult areas, teach new concepts, and become accountable to another. However, meeting face to face for Laura and I was now impossible. As I began to search for a solution to this problem I came across the definition of mentoring. Mentoring simply put is to serve as a trusted counselor or teacher to another person. My hope was renewed. I was doing this! Thank the Lord for cell phones and free nights and weekends! Laura always called home each night after 8:00 p.m. when the call was free. I could take this nightly ritual one step further and set up a time when I could mentor her over the phone!

As you can imagine, college students always welcome care packages so when Laura received hers she was delighted! It contained a manuscript of the book, a beautiful journal, a fancy pen, a cute mug and her favorite lemon tea. One night a week, we chose to sip tea and talk about the important things while we were miles apart.

Mothers, is your daughter at college? Is she a mother in a home of her own? Is she in another state? Distance doesn't matter when it comes to mentoring. Imagination, careful scheduling, cell phones and the United States Post office can assist you in creating a memorable moment when you can become your daughters trusted counselor and teacher-- even if it is long distance!
