Party Etiquette

Party Etiquette

Be the Host or Hostess with the Mostess! Great Host and Hostesses are not just born they are trained to make other people feel comfortable. We call this tool Etiquette or good manners. One of the best methods to teach your child manners and etiquette is by hosting a party. The word etiquette is derived from the French word meaning ticket. By teaching your children party etiquette, you are giving them a ticket that will allow them to travel through all levels of society easily and a tool to help them feel more comfortable in social settings. Manners are not a set of do’s and don’ts but rather a set of behaviors that ensure others are treated with respect.

Party Planners Rules of Thumb:
· Invite same number of guests as the age of your child.
· Duration: Toddlers and preschoolers- Length 1 hour.
· Duration: Elementary age children- Length 2-3 hours
· Have at least one age appropriate activity, game, or craft.

Etiquette if you are the Host or Hostess:
· Greet guest at the door.
· Make sure you introduce everyone.
· Have a happy attitude and smile, smile, smile. Attitudes rub off!
· Make sure the drinks and food are available.
· Pay attention to ALL of your guests.
· Make sure their needs are met.
· Send thank you notes to all your guests about a week after your party. State specifically the gift received and why you like it or how you will use it!

Etiquette if you are the Guest:
· Never assume that your host knows you are coming to the party. By calling and giving an RSVP you are being a gracious guest.
· Gracious guests are friendly to the whole group. Never exclude anyone.
· Introduce yourself to others you don’t know.
· Participate in games cheerfully.
· Win and lose with grace.
· Properly dispose of paper plates, cups and napkins when you are finished.
· Thank the Host/Hostess and parents of the party before you leave.
· Arrive on time and leave on time.

Some of the suggestions listed appear to so simple, but we often time forget the everyday niceties that make others feel welcome and comfortable. Let the following list serve as a reminder for you, the parent, about the different areas that you can purposefully teach your child in the area of good manners.
